City of Detroit Building Demolitions

The City of Detroit Releases Locations

of Demolitions with a New Tool Designed

 by Data Driven Detroit

Data Driven Detroit (D3), in collaboration with the City of Detroit Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department (BSEED), is excited to announce the release of a new, interactive online map illustrating the locations of upcoming and completed demolitions in Detroit since 2010. Users can view the interactive map to see which buildings have been approved by Council for demolition, which are "in-process" of demolition (lining up funding, shutting off utilities, removing asbestos, etc), and which buildings have been completely cleared. Users can also use the map to provide feedback to BSEED in case of error, or to report a structure.

The scale of abandonment and blight in Detroit has become a national headline as well as the focus of a new genre of photography and documentary. Recognizing the scale of the problem, Mayor Bing has put a high priority on clearing dangerous structures throughout the city, and set an ambitious goal of demolishing 10,000 structures during his term in office.

While the process to demolish a structure includes a 36-step process, the City has made significant progress toward its goal. An operation of this scale and profile, however, is bound to draw questions from residents and stakeholders such as: "Where have the demolitions taken place?"; "Which buildings are slated for demolition?"; "What money is being used to demolish buildings in my neighborhood?"; "Who can I contact if there is a building on my block that has become unsafe and should be demolished?"

The new Detroit building demolitions interactive map, designed by Data Driven Detroit and tailored to the City's needs, helps answer these questions and concerns. The map enables the City of Detroit BSEED department to display their demolition permitting and activity data online for the general public. These data were not accessible until this point.

In accordance with our mission, D3 hopes that by making these data more accessible, community members and stakeholders will utilize this information to make data-driven decisions in the future. Since its release on July 25th, BSEED has received numerous property reports and other feedback.

The "City of Detroit Building Demolitions" tool has received attention from local network affiliates, WDIV and WXYZ .

Data Driven Detroit would like to thank the City of Detroit and BSEED for the opportunity to collaborate with them in this effort and for making the demolitions data available. We also wish to recognize and thank the Woodward Corridor Initiative, for generously providing funding for the development of this data and tool.
